Helpful Water Conservation Tips
Think in Environmentally- Friendly terms by living by these recommendations”
-
Early morning watering is best to reduce evaporative losses and to discourage fungus
-
To encourage a deep root system and discourage weed growth and fungus, water once or twice per week.
-
Water only when turf and plants need it. This would depend on weather conditions, plant types and soil conditions such as sandy, clay or heavy. Support local water conservation requirements (such as watering bans).
-
Encourage new plants and turf with adequate moisture but, reduce watering of mature grass and plants to go allow them to go dormant during dry spells
-
Plant perennial gardens, meadows, or woodlands to reduce turf areas.
-
Choose drought tolerant species when planting
-
Improve water retention by adding compost and organic matter to soil. Blanket bare soils with mulch or compost to reduce evaporation
-
Collect water in rain barrels for outside watering use
-
Using a hose without a nozzle is an inefficient way to water. It delivers water much more quickly than the landscape can absorb it, causing runoff that wastes water and carries away precious topsoil. Installing an irrigation system minimizes costly run off while ensuring your plants receive the water they need deep in their roots. If you must use a hose, make sure to attach a hose nozzle so water comes out in a spray and can easily be turned off when not in use.
