Lawn Care

A cultivated, healthy lawn with its large, unique root system accomplishes much more than just a clean, green look and plush exterior carpet to walk on.Picture of thriving green grass and clean garden beds

-A thick healthy lawn makes it easier to control weeds, insects and diseases.

-Deep rooted lawns improve the soil structure, reducing compaction, so infiltration of rain and irrigation water is enhanced. This will save water, which is a precious resource and in turn money.

-Your lawn improves processes within the soil that cause bio-degradation of all sorts of organic pollutants and contaminants coming from the atmosphere (such as excess carbon dioxide, ozone, hydrogen fluoride, and chemicals).

-Turf, especially when grass clippings are allowed to remain, promotes the improvement of the soil.

-The front lawn of a single average sized home has the cooling effect of about 8.75 tons of air conditioning, the average house size central air unit has a 3 to 4 ton capacity.

When we cultivate your lawn to the best it can be, it provides a wide variety of functional and aesthetic benefits for you. Remember, we can't be at your home all the time; so can't always supply the needed water. For this reason it is important you be our partner in the care of your landscape and remember to give your yard a bit of extra water during heat waves, water newly seeded lawns twice a day until water begins to run off, or have us install an in-ground irrigation system for your new lawn and garden beds.

Seeding

Sometimes, old grass just isn't worth the time and money to try to save, and a renovation or complete replacement with more up to date and appropriate grass varieties is in order (depending on shade and soil conditions). Reseeding a loan with fresh nutritient loam may be a recommendation for you. Picture of mulched garden with screened loam prepared for hydroseed

Once seeded, water must penetrate the seed for germination to start; the new grass plant begins to grow. This takes 10-14 days. Then it takes another week before you can even see the very tiny grass blade. In another week it is plain to see, but the process has taken 2.5-4 weeks! So be patient. Also, if water is withheld during the first two weeks, the seed dies! Water must be applied TWICE DAILY during the first two weeks (until water begins to run off) to help keep the seed moist. If twice daily watering of a newly seeded lawn may be burdensome for you, you may want to also have us give you a quote for a new inground irrigation system or hydroseed lawn.

Hydroseeding

Maintaining a Hydroseeded Lawn

We will use a tested, high quality, certified turf mix. Germination time depends on weather conditions, temperature and the amount of watering. Usually grass will be visible in 5-7 days, a few days slower in cold weather.

Care and Watering

Successful seed germination depends on a few days of special care. To assure proper germination, water regularly. Two times a day in warm weather is recommended. Keeping the yard moist will maximize seed germination. You may walk on the surface when watering, being careful not to disturb the mulch mat. By keeping your new seedlings from drying out, you protect the beginning of a lawn that will make your neighbors green with envy.

Mowing & Fertiliztion

Mow the grass approximately 3 weeks after seeding. Mowing stimulates growth and thickness. Set the mower high at first then gradually lower. Try to never cut more then 1/3 of the total grass blade length at a time. Keep blades sharpened, as dull blades will pull out seedlings. First mowing should be when grass reaches about 3".

You will want to fertilize 3 - 4 weeks after hydroseeding has been applied. Do not use any herbicides until at least 3 solid mowings.
